There had been rumors of a Pacquiao rematch with Floyd Mayweather, but those were put to rest when Mayweather followed through on his plans to retire, at least for now. So Pacquiao is turning his attention to Adrien Broner in what is Pacman’s first match in the States in over two years. A former four-division champion, Broner was shaky in his last two fights with a loss and a draw and faces the stiffest test of his career.

Let’s take a look at the boxing odds at BookMaker.eu, break down the matchup and go over your betting options.

The bout between Manny Pacquiao ( 60-7-2, 39 knockouts ) and Adrien Broner ( 33-3-1, 24 knockouts ) will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 19, 2019. This is the main event on a card that features several other fights and is available on Showtime pay-per-view. Pacman puts his WBA welterweight championship on the line in this 12 round fight.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Adrien Broner Fight Preview

The first major bout of the New Year takes place on Saturday when Pacquiao looks to retain his WBA belt he won back in July with a knockout of Matthysse in Malaysia. Now in his 40s, Pacman’s best days may be behind him, but he drank from the fountain of youth in his last bout, posting his first knockout victory since Miguel Cotto in 2009.

No stranger to the ring at the MGM Grand, Pacquiao will be fighting for the 14th time during his storied career at the venue that included some momentous battles against Oscar De La Hoya, Mayweather, Juan Manuel Marquez, Cotto and Ricky Hatton. However, his last two fights were overseas where he lost a controversial decision to Jeff Horn in Australia in 2017 followed by his knockout of Matthysse.

“The knockout in my last fight felt good. It felt like my younger days against Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and others. That fight was a big challenge for me to recover from the fight against Jeff Horn,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquaio shows no signs of slowing down now that he’s reached 40, and the KO of Matthysse shows he still packs a punch. He’s never been a knockout fighter as evidenced by his 39 KOs in 69 bouts, and still considers himself more of a boxer than a puncher. He’s been reunited with longtime trainer Freddie Roach, who left the fighter’s team after the loss to Horn. With Roach back in Pacman’s corner, his training regimen was more structured, and Pacquiao said he feels stronger than he ever has. Roach dittos those comments. “He hit me once in the chest protector and I’m telling you, it’s the hardest I have ever been hit.”

This is an enormous opportunity for Broner to get his game back on track and he should be a desperate fighter after poor showings in his last two bouts. Broner came away with a draw against Jessie Vargas last summer, but he rallied in the second half of that fight after Vargas had his way early. That followed a decisive loss to Mikey Garcia in July 2017.

There’s no denying Broner has talent he just tends to rely on that alone instead of actually training for his fights. When taking on top-level opponents he loses, and he has a reputation for entering the ring in less than optimum condition. That won’t cut it against Pacquiao and Broner realizes that.

Broner talks a big game, now it’s time to live up to it. “I’m not in awe of any fighter, especially Manny Pacquiao. I hope he’s in awe of me,” he said. “Saturday night I will be victorious. This is a defining moment in my career and it’s going to be one of the biggest nights of my life.”

Boxing Betting Tips

This fight has a good chance of going the distance since Broner has been knocked down just a few times in his career and Pacquiao has a way of avoiding the mat. The challenger can talk about winning the fight, but doing it against one of the all-time greats is another story. There is a gap in age, which should help Broner, but Pacman wants to be remembered as one of the best ever and piling up decisive wins after 40 is a way to do that. The odds are long, but Pacquiao is the pick.
